Microsoft has announced the end of support for Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 in 2025

One year from today, on October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for Exchange Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2019. This means that after this date, Microsoft will not provide additional technical support or security for these versions of Exchange Server that currently contained in this definition The deadline for providing assistance to end-user businesses and organizations emphasizes priority planning for their transition to the new solution.


After October 14, 2025, Exchange 2016 and 2019 users will no longer have access to 

Technical Support: No support will be available for issues such as installation, configuration, or other technical difficulties.

Additional security issues: Without security measures in place, these servers can be vulnerable to incoming threats, increasing the risk of being used in an enterprise environment.

Bug fixes: Any software bugs or bugs reported after this date will not be handled by Microsoft, and may affect business operations.


Upgrading to Microsoft 365 or Exchange Server subscription versions

To avoid disruption, Microsoft recommends switching to Exchange Online, which offers a well-managed cloud solution with continuous updates and robust security features that make Exchange Online part of the broader Microsoft 365 suite , ensuring integration with modern office equipment and advanced workflows.

For those who want to stay on on-premise servers, Microsoft will release Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) in 2025, which will offer expanded support and new features for businesses that still need on-premise deployment.


The next step for IT Admins 

If you are still running Exchange 2016 or 2019, now is the time to start planning a migration. Consider these options:

Upgrade to Exchange Online – The cloud-based option offers the latest features and security.

Move to the Exchange Server subscription version – a new version for those who want to manage their own servers.

Look into other cloud solutions – Other cloud-based email services, such as Google Workspace can also be viable options.
