VLC Media Player Introduces Game-Changing Feature

VLC Media Player, developed by the nonprofit organization VideoLAN, has achieved a monumental milestone with over 6 billion downloads worldwide. At CES 2025, the team unveiled an innovative AI-powered subtitle feature set to revolutionize user experience.

This groundbreaking functionality will enable real-time subtitle generation and translation for any video, powered by local, open-source AI models. Impressively, the feature operates entirely offline, requiring no internet connection or cloud-based services, as demonstrated by VideoLAN at the event.

Originally launched in 1996 by students at École Centrale Paris as a project to stream videos across campus, VLC has remained free and ad-free for nearly three decades. VideoLAN continues to prioritize user privacy by rejecting advertisements, data collection, or commercial revenue streams.

In a LinkedIn post, Jean-Baptiste Kempf, President of VideoLAN, highlighted the growing number of VLC users, even as competition intensifies in the streaming industry.

The AI-powered subtitle and translation feature is designed to run locally, eliminating dependency on internet connectivity. However, VideoLAN has yet to announce an official release date.

According to developers, a detailed blog post outlining the feature's capabilities will be published soon. While the supported languages and system requirements for local AI processing remain unspecified, images from CES hinted at translations in languages like German, Hebrew, Japanese, and French.

Stay tuned for updates as VideoLAN prepares to roll out this innovative new feature!
