Microsoft has once again drawn attention for its aggressive approach to keeping Edge as the default browser on Windows. Recently, the company quietly removed a misleading support page titled "How to Uninstall Microsoft Edge," which, instead of providing actual removal steps, simply stated that Edge is an essential part of Windows and cannot be uninstalled.
The Fake Guide and Its Controversy
For years, Windows users frustrated with Edge’s forced presence have searched for ways to uninstall the browser, only to be met with Microsoft’s firm stance that Edge is integral to the operating system. However, Microsoft took this a step further by publishing a so-called "uninstall guide" that did not actually provide any useful steps. Instead, it suggested that users could "simply choose another browser" while keeping Edge installed.
This misleading approach was widely criticized by tech communities, as it disregarded users’ preference for control over their own systems. Many saw it as another tactic to push Edge onto users, similar to Microsoft's persistent pop-ups urging people to switch back to Edge from Chrome or Firefox.
Microsoft Removes the Page – But Not the Problem
Without any public announcement, Microsoft recently removed the deceptive uninstall guide. While this move might indicate that the company is backtracking due to user complaints, Edge still remains difficult to remove from Windows. In fact, recent updates to Windows 11 have made it even harder to fully uninstall Edge, with workarounds often being undone after system updates.
Can You Still Uninstall Edge?
For tech-savvy users, uninstalling Edge is possible through PowerShell commands or third-party uninstallers, but Microsoft actively discourages such actions. If you're looking for a way to remove Edge, you'll have to dig deeper than Microsoft's official documentation.
